Return of Monday Night League

Bel Mateo Bowl
After more than a 3-month absence, my Monday night league resumes tomorrow.

Excited to return, but must remind myself not to expect too much. I haven't touched a bowling ball since the pandemic.

The biggest adjustment will be wearing a mask while bowling. Here are the house guidelines:

We are adhering to state and county (California,  San Mateo County) guidelines and would like to explain what our protocols will be for re-starting your league.
  • Everyone will be screened via an infra-red thermal camera at the door before entering the building. Anyone reading over 100.4 will not be allowed into the building.
  • Hands will be sanitized. Masks must be worn at all times except when eating or drinking.
  • Plexiglass has been placed at all points of contact with the staff including the front desk, bar and bistro. Each pair of lanes have been sectioned off with plexiglass shields.
  • Social distancing should be followed throughout the building.  Hand sanitizer is available throughout the building including behind each pair of lanes.
  • When bowling, you must still wear a mask. We recommend the following placement of team members to be able to follow the social distancing guidelines.
  • While one person is on the lane, the other three team members should spread themselves out with one person on the purple seats, one person by the back of the settee area or wooden benches and one person up on the concourse.
  • The other team should do the same with two people up on the concourse. All rest rooms have an option to use a "Foot" door opener.
  • The entire bowling area will be sanitized prior to your arrival and after your departure.
Wish me luck tomorrow.

2016 - 2017 Bowling Stats - Season to Date

Monday night, Bel Mateo Bowl

Wednesday night, Classic Bowling Center

The above screenshots are taken from my Monday and Wednesday night leagues. It's my guess most bowlers don't know their weekly statistics, or like me, never really looked at them. Or you don't care because you're there for fun. Game and series score ranges are consistent across both leagues.

This past Wednesday, I set 2 personal records, 2 games above 200 in a series, and scratch series of 575. I have a total of 5 games of 200 or above for the 2016-17 season. Of the 5, I bowled 3 of them in the past 2 weeks.

Season in both leagues will end in 2 weeks, just before I head to Europe. Both teams in currently in 2nd. If we hang on, we'll be in contention to bowl for the bigger bucks in position round.

Wish me luck.

Bowling Weekend Overload

This weekend, I was in maximum overload with bowling. No tournaments, only practice. And lots of it.

Yesterday, I bowled 6 practice games.

Today, it was my usual morning practice of 8 games with Wednesday night friends. When I finished, I grabbed a granola bar from the vending machine and caught up on news on my phone. Then I left Classic Bowl and drove to Bel Mateo for fellow Monday night friend Will's 50th birthday.

Wish I'd done what Will and his wife Jules did. They reserved the entire center for 3 hours. If you didn't want to bowl, you could hang out in one of the party rooms, the bar, or like the fanatic I am, roll in my bag and bowl more games.

But first, some much needed food. Then bowled 6 more games with my Monday night teammate Ronnie. Fun, closely fought battles. Probably the most non-league fun I've had since the late Saturday nights at Classic Bowl with Jeff, Burton, and Lester.

In one of the games, it came down to the last frame. I had been ahead most of the way. Ronnie bowled strikes in the 9th frame and 2 in the 10th. In my last frame, I needed to pick up 2 pins (the 4-7) for the spare to win. I picked up only 1. I lost the game by 1 pin.

I finished the afternoon completing 20 games in 2 days. I bowl 3 more games tomorrow night. Can't wait.

Tony Reyes Fundraiser - Sunday, October 14, Bel Mateo Bowl

As I shared on my Facebook page, if there any San Francisco Bay Area bowlers that are interested, Bel Mateo Bowl is hosting a fundraiser for the Reyes family on Sunday, October 14 at 6 p.m. Check-in time is 5:30 p.m.

Tony and co-owner Lindsey Wong operate a pro shop inside 4th Street Bowl in San Jose. I found out tonight Tony was very much involved in youth bowling. This is not a USBC event, so non-league bowlers are welcome to participate. The fundraiser is limited to the first 90 bowlers and spots are filling up quickly.

If you are unable to attend, but want to donate, please make your check payable to the Tony Reyes Memorial Fund and mail it to:
4th Street Bowl
1441 North 4th Street
San Jose, CA 95112

or:
Bel Mateo Bowl
attn: Craig Gabriel
4330 Olympic Ave.
San Mateo, CA 94403

My Monday night league teammates and I will be there to bowl. Hope you can help and/or see you there.

UPDATE - October 8, 2012 - As of tonight, there are still about 40 slots still available for Sunday's fundraiser at Bel Mateo Bowl. This is a great excuse for those of you in the area and/or haven't bowled in awhile to come out for a worthy cause.
